Location: SBNF/ANF Border Area, San Gabriel Mountains, CA, USA Distance: approx 16 mi r/t Elevation: 6160' (Manker Flats Trailhead), 10064' (Mt Baldy), 9575' (Dawson Peak), 9648' (Pine Mountain) Terrain: Mountain, Shrubland, Forest Photos below courtesy of Ellen:  San Antonio Falls, near the start of the Ski Hut Trail.  A flower along the trail.  Lou descending the north face of Mt. Baldy. Red algae on the snow.  The saddle between Baldy and Dawson was sketchy at times.  Some neat twisted tree shapes.  Lou is walking along the stretch between Dawson and Pine covered in slate.  Ellen is striking a pose at the rock table and chair set on Pine Mountain.  A shortcut gone wrong, filled with slippery slopes and horrible chaparral.  A great view of the surroundings, from the return trip back to Mt. Baldy. Location: San Bernardino National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains, CA, USA Distance: 17 mi (hike) Elevation: 3980' (Middle Fork Trailhead), 7555' (Icehouse Saddle), 8859' (Cucamonga Peak) Terrain: Mountain, Forest, River, Shrubland  Started at this trailhead.  The trail, before Third Stream.  Third Stream Crossing.  A shelter at Third Stream.  The trail, past Third Stream.  Sign at Icehouse Saddle.  Scarlet Bugler.  Manzanita berries.  Fiddleneck.  Pom pom plant.  Purple pinecones.  Ferns.  The trail towards Cucamonga Peak.  Peeking inside a mine.  Last sign to Cucamonga Peak.  Bighorn Peak (foreground), Mount Baldy (background). Location: San Bernardino National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains, CA, USA Distance: 9 mi (bike, round trip) + 8 mi (hike, round trip) Elevation: 1400 to 4800 feet Terrain: Suburban, Foothills  This forlorn sign near the beginning hints at the state of repair for the trail.  A view toward the Claremont towers.  Most of the trail is threatened by encroaching brush as shown in this picture.  Occasionally, shoulder-height grass obstructs the trail.  The trail is often overgrown. Serious maintenance should be done.  This sign suggests the trail may have been paved in the past.  A nice view of the rolling slopes and sharp drop of Cucamonga Canyon.  A great view of the Inland Empire from the trail.  This abandoned campfire has been here since my last visit.  This sign marked my turn-back point for the hike.  A view of Frankish Peak's eastern approach.  Cucamonga peak is visible behind the foreground ridge.  This set of switchbacks is also visible from Rancho Cucamonga.  Dodder, a stringy orange plant parasite.  Fuzzy purple flowers which I thought was poodle dog bush.  This plant has some nasty red welts.  Some kind of wild peas.  The buckthorn plants here have berries. Location: Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains, CA, USA Distance: 6 mi round trip (hike) Elevation: 3790 to 4624 feet (multiple ascents/descents) Terrain: River, Shrubland, Foothills, Mountain  One of the nicer looking houses in the residential area near the trailhead.  A gate that makes sure one neither shoots nor discharges firearms.  After leaving the shaded area, looking north towards Mt Baldy Road.  Probably poodle dog bush flowers. The plant is rather common in this area.  My Etiwanda Ridge nemesis, some kind of buckthorn.  Some stringy pom-pom plant.  Looking south towards the first false peak, which is also the way to Stoddard Peak.  A view of Stoddard Peak in the back, and second false peak to the front left.  View from second false peak towards Frankish Peak.  A garter snake chilling on the ridge trail. Spotted by Maribelle.  Some kind of marker at Stoddard Peak.  Trying to see how my camera would handle the low clouds that rolled in as we rested at Stoddard Peak.  A waterfall that many people drive over without knowing it is there. Location: Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains, CA, USA Distance: 8.7 mi round trip (hike) Elevation: 5000 to 7600 feet Terrain: Forest, River, Mountain  Following Jerry as we started hiking the Icehouse Canyon Trail.  The trail follows this creek most of the way.  The occasional ruins may be seen along the trail.  A distant waterfall on the other side of the canyon.  Some deer seen from the path leading up to Icehouse Saddle.  Despite the heat in May, there was still some snow on the approach to the saddle.  This sign at Icehouse Saddle marks the trail to Cucamonga Peak.  Some parts of Chapman Trail are quite narrow and rocky.  A view down Icehouse Canyon, from Chapman Trail. From the second gate, looking down at the canyon mouth.  Just past the second gate, looking at the main canyon.  Upper trail goes east, lower trail goes west.
